When I was in a training course earlier this year I just used VMWare 
Fusion to run a copy of MarkLogic under Linux.  It seemed to work quite 
well, and is probably suitable for light development, though I doubt it 
is performant in any way.  The only niggle was that I had to enable 
bridged networking so I could get the host and guest to talk to each other.
