[MarkLogic Dev General] databases.xml

OK - thanks for the heads up. Might I suggest the simple addition of an
"import/export configuration" on the admin UI would be a huge boon.

A system that at some level uses files is terrifically useful, since it
allows the use of files-based tools like version control to be applied to
the config. I understand you need to maintain some control over the config
so the database is not compromised in some way, but I wonder if it would be
possible to support importing (a possibly reduced set of) configuration from
an external file. This would be hugely useful in supporting multiple
installations of the same or similar database setups.

Mike,

Making changes directly to configuration files is not supported. I do not
recommend it.

In a future release, we will add the ability to manage MarkLogic Server's
configuration by writing XQuery code. This will be a supported alternative
to the admin UI, not direct manipulation of config files.

Is there any concern about updating database config by:

1) shutting down
2) editing databases.xml (say to copy indexing config; not creating new db
or forest)
3) starting up

I tried with a test setup and it seems to be doing the right thing
(re-indexing the databases that changed config).

This is so much easier and less error-prone than using the web UI to cut and
paste all the fields, indexing parameters, phrase-throughs, range indexes
and so on.

-Mike
