[MarkLogic Dev General] setting tree cache partitions?

In the MarkLogic admin console, Groups configure panel, what is the 
effect of increasing the default number of partitions (1) for any of the 
caches (list, compressed tree, expanded tree)? It's not documented in 
the Admin docs.
